Troisdorf (ots)

Every year, police have to remind motorists that winter can be slippery, autumn can be rainy, and spring can be unpredictable. And summer is always hot. Although it’s not yet summer according to the calendar, temperatures in the Rhineland remain stable between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius every day.

At noon yesterday (May 14), at 10:50 a.m., the thermometer in Troisdorf Town Hall already read a comfortable 26 degrees. A Mercedes van was parked in the parking lot of City Hall on Kellnerstrasse, with a dog locked inside. Only one window was cracked open.

Troisdorf Police Department officers noticed a panting Australian Shepherd who was clearly suffering from the heat inside the vehicle. Police were able to open the car, free the dog, and give it water.

About 25 minutes later, the driver appeared at his car, got in, and attempted to drive away. The 55-year-old man didn’t even realize his dog was no longer in the car. The officers spoke to him and pointed out his misconduct.

According to ADAC measurements, if the outside temperature is 26 degrees, the vehicle will heat up to 40 degrees after just 20 minutes. Even if the window is opened 5 cm, the internal temperature will be close to 50 degrees after 40 minutes.

Dogs cannot regulate their body temperature through sweating, so if the indoor temperature exceeds 40 degrees, their lives are at risk. Therefore, it is better to take your pet with you or leave it at home.

If you see a dangerous dog trapped in a car in the heat, please report it to the Public Safety Bureau or the police. We strongly advise against breaking car windows or taking other steps to save animals, even if you have “good intentions.” You are working on a difficult area of law. Call the experts!

The dog was returned to its owner. An investigation is pending on suspicion of violating the Animal Welfare Act. (B)
