The state Department of Environment believes it is “very likely” that a wolf was involved in the incident. “The results of genetic testing are not clear but point to the involvement of wolves,” an agency spokesperson wrote on Tuesday.

Based on the genetic samples, as well as the recorded bite and description of the situation, we believe a wolf was most likely the culprit.

A few weeks ago, a hunting dog was injured in Haversee (Potsdam Mittelmark district). According to the owner, the dog was probably unsupervised in the forest and was not used as a hunting dog.

The genetic samples were then tested by the Center for Wildlife Genetics at the Senckenberg Institute in Hessen using two methods.

The wire-haired dachshund received veterinary treatment, but his injuries were not life-threatening, the association said.

So far, attacks on herbivores mainly by wolves are known. According to the state environment ministry, there are currently around 52 wolf packs in Brandenburg.

The number of wolf attacks increased from 297 in 2022 to 358 last year. 1281 sheep and goats were killed.
