Although it may seem different for dogs than for humans, dogs also sweat and suffer from heat. That doesn’t help. Sooner or later, a person or an animal has to go out into the shade, even if the temperature is 30 degrees. Luckily, there are ways to make the heat a little more bearable for your four-legged friends.

Water helps dogs in the heat

First things first: Animal rights group Peta points out that dogs have very few sweat glands in their paws, so they’re not good at regulating their body temperature through sweating. Therefore, the most important cooling mechanism is punting. Problem: A large amount of liquid evaporates in a short period of time. It needs to be balanced. Therefore, give your dog plenty of fluids to compensate for this. You can also carry a bottle of water along the way.

Try new things more often: Walk new trails in the heat with your dog

If it’s hot outside, it’s not always a good idea to strictly follow your habits. Marie Nitzschner and Nadia Wattad, behavioral researchers and dog trainers at the German Animal Welfare Association, advise Deutsche Presse to avoid the heat of the day and instead take long walks in the early morning or evening. There is. Athletic activities (cycling and playing) in the heat are also discouraged, but opportunities for swimming are ideal. Usually walk on a paved path, but avoid it when it’s hot and it’s best to check the heat of the surface with your hands.

Nitzschner and Wattad also recommend monitoring your dog’s heat tolerance. This varies from dog to dog and most importantly from breed to breed. For example, a pug or a French bulldog are especially sensitive.

Refreshing dog ice cream on a hot day

Is holding a cold ice cream in your hand the best way to cool down? This also applies to dogs! Nitschner recommends mixing bananas and yogurt, for example. Oatmeal, baby porridge and cottage cheese are also suitable for ice cream. All come in a small freezer freshness box and can be given to your dog directly in a bowl as a treat. By the way, ice cube trays are not suitable for this, as they pose a choking hazard.

Dangerous cars: no exceptions here!

It goes without saying for many people, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Under no circumstances should you leave your dog alone in a car. This is true even if the window is rolled down. Even in cloudy or humid weather, a car can fall into a death trap in just a few minutes. If you see a dog locked in a car, call the police immediately. This can save lives!

Emergency: Symptoms of heatstroke in dogs

Despite all precautions, difficulties can still arise. Severe redness of the mucous membranes, very pale appearance, shallow breathing, slowed reactions, and apathetic behavior may indicate life-threatening circulatory problems. Loss of balance, vomiting, and eventually loss of consciousness are emergency warning signs. Overheated dogs should be taken to the veterinarian immediately. ■
