It’s been a few weeks since Egon the dog escaped death. Bremerhaven Animal Shelter has filed criminal charges against the alleged owner and an investigation is underway.

In response to this cruel incident, a petition has been launched among the citizens of Bremen calling for stronger animal protection in the canton of Bremen. There are already over 4,000 signatories. The goal is to reach 5,000 animals by the April 25 deadline, said Amélie Bensch, the animal shelter’s manager.

Many people acquire animals without thinking and want to get rid of them immediately. As a result, animal shelters are full. Pets are rarely accepted from households anymore. Found animals, primarily adopted by police and fire departments, find temporary homes at animal shelters.
